Master Thesis in data analysis about taxi location data

Open
Description:

We offer a Master’s Thesis position focused on the study of urban mobility patterns using taxi location data.

The student will work with large-scale taxi datasets and analyze how taxi demand varies across space and time. The main objective of the thesis is to investigate the impact of major events in Barcelona (such as conferences, concerts, sports events, and festivals) on taxi demand and mobility dynamics.

The project will involve:
Processing and cleaning large geolocated datasets
Time-series and spatial data analysis
Correlating taxi demand with an external dataset of events in Barcelona
Identifying patterns, anomalies, and demand peaks
Developing statistical models to quantify event-driven demand changes
Visualizing results through maps and dashboards

The student will join an active research group working on data science, urban analytics, and mobility studies, and will receive close supervision throughout the thesis. The work may lead to a scientific publication depending on results.

Requirements:

Background in Civil Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or Mathematics.
Strong programming skills in Python or R
Basic knowledge of machine learning and statistical modeling
Experience with geospatial data analysis (GIS tools, GeoPandas, or similar) is a plus
Ability to work independently and manage research tasks
Good written and spoken English skills. Catalan is a plus
Interest in urban mobility, smart cities, and data-driven decision-making will be highly valued.

How to apply:

Send an email to biel.pallares@upc.edu with a short motivation letter and your CV, and with the subject line as the title of the thesis offer
